Grigor Dimitrov has spoken again about his dramatic match against Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon 2025, when, leading by two sets, he suffered a serious pectoral muscle injury that forced him to retire from the match. The 35-year-old Bulgarian tennis player has gone through a difficult period and has plummeted in the rankings, leading many to believe his retirement is now imminent.

“I was playing fantastic tennis against Jannik, then the nightmare began. I tried to tell myself that everything was fine; it was almost an out-of-body experience. I served again, hoping everything was normal, but then I heard a strange noise, almost like a snap. I had the sensation that the muscle was moving under the skin,” he said during a podcast with Patrick Mouratoglou.

“The moment I hit the ball, I felt like my arm was on the other side of the court. That’s when I really got worried, since the pain was located more or less in the center of my chest. I was afraid it might be a heart problem,” according to Il Tennis Italiano.

Sinner was also deeply moved and had kind words for him after the match: “I don’t know what to say; Dimitrov is an incredible player and was truly unlucky. He’s a good friend, we know each other well, and I hope he returns as soon as possible. I don’t feel like a winner at all, and I don’t feel like saying anything else.” The Italian then went on to win the tournament by defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the final.
