Kimi Antonelli vs. Russell: Villeneuve Is Relentless

Former Formula 1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve, speaking to Sky F1, had some sharp comments on the new rivalry between Andrea Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, which also played out in Barcelona. Before retiring due to a mechanical failure in his Mercedes, the driver from Bologna had managed to overtake his teammate, who had started from pole position.

According to Villeneuve, the outcome of the latest battle is another sign that the balance has shifted completely in the Italian’s favor: “Russell didn’t defend well; he waited too long and left the door open. He didn’t look like a driver fighting for the championship.”

Russell is paying a psychological price for his rivalry with Antonelli, according to Villeneuve: “It seemed as though he had already lost the battle against his teammate right from the start. His driving was truly disappointing. He lacked pace, was losing positions, and ultimately succumbed to the pressure.”

This assessment is shared by another highly experienced former driver. Nico Rosberg, who experienced similar dynamics firsthand at Mercedes during his rivalry with Lewis Hamilton, pointed the finger directly at Toto Wolff for the team’s handling of the Catalan weekend: “Mercedes paid too much attention to George; they protected him too much. As soon as the team risks losing the victory, everyone races together for the team’s success. And Mercedes should have done that sooner: Antonelli was once again the fastest.” Rosberg then added a dig at Russell’s performance in qualifying and the race: “In qualifying, he competes with the best, but in the race, he’s missing something.”
