On the Petit Flambeau, meanwhile, a 69-year-old British mountaineer fell to his death during a rappelling descent when the rock to which he was anchored suddenly gave way; finally, near Les Houches, an 80-year-old hiker was struck down by a sudden heart attack that left him no chance of survival.
