With the men’s semifinals now over, Italian fans are looking forward to Saturday, as there are no Italian players in the finals of the other events (women’s singles, men’s doubles, and juniors) scheduled for that day. Anticipation is therefore inevitably building for the match between Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev, who are facing off for the second time in a Grand Slam final: their only previous meeting in a Grand Slam final dates back to 2025, when the Italian defeated the German 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 to win the Australian Open.

Zverev has also faced Sinner in the finals of two other tournaments: in Vienna in 2025 and, more recently, at the last Masters 1000 in Madrid. Once again, the head-to-head record favors the champion from Sesto Pusteria, but “Sascha,” who won at Roland Garros a month ago, is brimming with confidence: “When you win a Grand Slam, you really understand that you can do it again—that feeling stays with you,” he said following his semifinal victory over Arthur Fery.

“The key point, however, is something else: over the past few months, I’ve made concrete improvements to my tennis—forehand, backhand, serve, and return. Sometimes in sports, the truth is simple: if you raise the level of your game, you win more matches. People often talk about mental aspects or changes in the team, but in the end, it all starts there: you become a better player, you get better results,” he explained further.

The overall head-to-head record between Zverev and Sinner shows four wins for the German against ten for the South Tyrolean: after the Italian’s then-surprising victory in their head-to-head match at the 2020 French Open, “Sascha” won four straight matches against him, only to lose the next nine. Their most recent match, in Madrid, saw Sinner dominate with a decisive 6-1, 6-2 victory; Zverev, however, is ready to mount his challenge, knowing that no matter what happens on Sunday, he will become the new world No. 2, overtaking Carlos Alcaraz.
