Ralf Edstrom’s Incredible Record

There are careers that are remembered for a goal, a trophy, or an iconic image. And then there are those that go down in history for something even rarer: the ability to win no matter what jersey they wear. Such is the case with Ralf Edstrom, a Swedish forward active from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s, who left his mark wherever he went. In fact, Edstrom won at least one title with every team he played for.

This surprising fact was highlighted by Bruno Scurti Natarella, moderator of the Facebook page “Quando i calciatori avevano facce da calciatori” (“When Soccer Players Looked Like Soccer Players”), who traced the career of Edstrom, born in 1952 in Degerfors, where he took his first steps with the local team before joining Atvidaberg, immediately adding two Swedish league titles and one Swedish Cup to the trophy case between 1971 and 1973.

After transferring to PSV Eindhoven, Edstrom continued to rack up successes between 1973 and 1977, winning two Eredivisie titles (1975 and 1976) and two Dutch Cups (1974 and 1976). The Swede’s career then continued in two-year cycles: with IFK Göteborg, he won another Swedish Cup (1977); with Standard Liège, he won a Belgian national cup (1981); and with Monaco, he celebrated the 1981‑82, and with Örgryte, he added another Swedish championship in 1985.

In total, Ralf Edström won six championships, five national cups, two Guldbollen (the Swedish Ballon d’Or), and the title of top scorer in the 1972 Allsvenskan, while also making 40 appearances for his national team, scoring 15 goals. He was also named to the 1975 World XI by the influential magazines “World Soccer” and “Sport,” and has been a member of the Swedish Soccer Hall of Fame since 2003.
