2026 European Athletics Championships: Updated Medal Count

From Monday, August 10, through Sunday, August 16, Birmingham will host the European Athletics Championships for the first time. Alexander Stadium will serve as the venue for the 27th edition of the continental championships, bringing together over 1,600 athletes from 49 countries who will compete in 50 events.

The competitions will take place at a fast pace over seven days, with morning, afternoon, and evening sessions. The opening ceremony is scheduled for the evening of Monday, August 10. That day will feature the first rounds of the women’s shot put and men’s hammer throw, as well as the heats for the men’s 800 m, women’s 100 m, men’s 400 m, and women’s 400 m hurdles, in addition to the men’s long jump and shot put qualifying rounds. The first medals will be awarded that evening: the women’s and men’s shot put finals, the men’s 5,000-meter race, the mixed 4×400-meter relay, and the women’s 100-meter race.

On Tuesday, the 11th, the competition continues with the men’s high jump and discus throw qualifiers, as well as the heats and semifinals for the sprints and hurdles, leading up to the men’s hammer throw final, the women’s 5,000 m, the men’s long jump, and the highly anticipated men’s 100-meter dash (scheduled for 10:47 p.m. Italian time). On Wednesday the 12th and Thursday the 13th, the men’s decathlon and the discus, hammer, javelin, 200-meter, 400-meter, and 800-meter events take center stage, along with several throwing and hurdle finals.

Friday the 14th features the women’s heptathlon, while Saturday the 15th will see the race walks (half and marathon) take place outside the stadium, along with other jumping and running events. On Sunday the 16th, the men’s and women’s marathons, the 4×100 and 4×400 relays, and finals such as the men’s pole vault will bring the competition to a close. The race walking and marathon events take place on city streets and are not part of the in-stadium program

Italy is heading to the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham with a record delegation of 132 athletes (70 men and 62 women), the largest ever. Following the triumph in Rome 2024, the goal is to reaffirm its position at the top of the European rankings. Among the expected stars are Marcell Jacobs, Gianmarco Tamberi, Nadia Battocletti, Yeman Crippa, Antonella Palmisano, Mattia Furlani, Zaynab Dosso, Larissa Iapichino, and many other Italian athletes in pursuit of medals.
