Jonas Vingegaard throws in the towel: a bitter announcement

Jonas Vingegaard will not compete in any more races in 2026: the announcement came from the Danish champion himself and was confirmed by his team, Team Visma-Lease a Bike, three weeks after the conclusion of the Tour de France—a race the two-time winner of the Grande Boucle was unable to finish, having been forced to withdraw due to a bad crash on Stage 15, when he was second in the overall standings behind Tadej Pogacar.

“After a long and intense racing period, a recovery period following the Tour de France was already planned,” Vingegaard told Team Visma-Lease a Bike’s media channels. “Due to the collarbone injury, the resumption of my training has been rescheduled, knowing that I won’t be able to return to the highest level anytime soon. The goal is to prepare as best as possible for the 2027 season; I’ll discuss the plan with the team in the coming weeks.”

Sports director Marc Reef confirmed Vingegaard’s hiatus for the 2026 season: “As announced at the start of the season, we were going to take stock of the remainder of the year after the Tour de France. After an intense period, the collarbone fracture Jonas sustained during the Tour meant that the best decision for him was to focus on 2027. Together with Jonas, over the coming weeks we’ll evaluate the right training plan and goals for the new year.”

Born in 1996 and raised in the Danish town of Hillerslev, Jonas Vingegaard is one of only eight cyclists to have won all three Grand Tours, having claimed the Tour in 2022 and 2023, the Vuelta in 2025, and the Giro d’Italia in 2026. This season, in addition to the Corsa Rosa, he also won Paris-Nice and contributed to Team Visma-Lease a Bike’s victory in the team time trial in Barcelona, the first stage of the 2026 Tour, which, however, turned out to be decidedly unlucky for Vingegaard.
