Andrea Kimi Antonelli finished the first half of the Formula 1 World Championship with a 50-point lead over Lewis Hamilton and a 59-point lead over his teammate George Russell, confirming his incredible dominance in this first half of the season. The young Mercedes driver has adapted perfectly to the new regulations and has secured 6 wins and 9 podium finishes for a total of 219 points.

Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher spoke to Sky about the incredible progress made by the driver from Bologna: “The fact that Kimi is achieving such good results and staying calm is truly incredible. It was predictable to see Mercedes at the top, but not a Kimi like this.”

“What makes him a potential world champion is undoubtedly his ability to get a little more out of the car than, say, George Russell at the moment. The speed at which he’s matured over the last few months is incredible.”

Schumacher doesn’t think the World Championship is over yet, however—quite the opposite: “Mercedes needs to introduce updates now. McLaren is gaining ground, and Ferrari is capable of winning races. It’ll be a tight fight. And you should never underestimate Red Bull Racing with Max Verstappen, even if the car is still a bit tricky to handle. A lot will depend on how Mercedes has worked during this summer break to maintain its lead over all its rivals. I’d be surprised if they didn’t update their car.”

Many in the paddock—and beyond—believe the Bolognese driver can win the title. Former Haas team principal Günther Steiner didn’t hide his enthusiasm on the “Up to Speed” podcast: “Kimi Antonelli will win. I think this young talent is doing an incredible job. I would never have said ‘Kimi’ six months ago, but now… he’s really delivering excellent performances. Mercedes is also in a strong position. I believe Kimi will take home the title.” Bernie Ecclestone is on the same page, stating bluntly in an interview with Blick: “Kimi Antonelli will win the World Championship, even though Verstappen remains the best driver on the track.” And Max Verstappen, interviewed by Sky Sports, also had words of great praise for the young Mercedes driver: “Really strong, really solid—the strongest on the team. It’s great to see him. First and foremost, he’s a good person and a very strong driver, so it’s a great combination.”
