Jannik Sinner has returned to J Medical for further evaluations ahead of his return to the court. Having arrived from Monte Carlo, the world No. 1 is continuing his rehabilitation for the knee injury that has been plaguing him for several weeks, forcing him to make the painful decision to withdraw from the U.S. Open, following his withdrawals from the Montreal and Cincinnati Masters 1000 tournaments.

The Italian champion looked serious and didn’t smile as he entered the Juventus facility, where he will undergo knee examinations and tests to determine his recovery timeline once and for all. The hope is to return in September for the tournaments in China to best prepare for the final stretch of the season leading up to the ATP Finals in Turin.

The world No. 1 in 2026 has won five consecutive Masters 1000 tournaments (Miami, Indian Wells, Monte Carlo, Madrid, and Rome) and Wimbledon for the second consecutive year. At the Australian Open, he was eliminated in the semifinals by Djokovic, while at Roland Garros, he was knocked out in the first round after suffering a physical collapse during his match against Cerundolo.

“Despite the hard work done with my team and the medical staff, we had to make the difficult decision not to participate in this year’s US Open,” Sinner announced in recent days. We’ve been back training in Monte Carlo over the past few days and realized we need more time to recover from the issue with my right knee. I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, since New York holds a special place in my heart.”

Diego Nargiso, a former Italian tennis player and commentator for Supertennis, tried to explain the injury: “I have a feeling this is an issue he’s been dealing with for a while. He’s one of the top ‘imitators’ of Djokovic when it comes to spectacular recoveries and slides on hard courts. That style of play gradually causes microtraumas. Since Sinner isn’t among the most muscular players on the tour, he evidently tends to suffer this type of joint damage more.” Nargiso nevertheless expressed confidence that the injury can be managed: “I think it’s mostly a nagging issue that he’s kept under control for some time. He’s chosen to put his health first so as not to jeopardize the end of the season.”
