Jannik Sinner: John McEnroe Makes a Surprising Prediction

John McEnroe continues to follow contemporary tennis very closely, and in an interview with Cadena SER, he had words of great praise for both Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. The former world No. 1 focused in particular on the rivalry between the two champions, identifying it as one of the factors that have helped raise the level of the men’s tour even further.
The three-time Wimbledon champion then emphasized how the growth of the player from Murcia and that of the Italian have been closely linked: According to McEnroe, Alcaraz has made Sinner better, and Sinner has made Alcaraz better, fueling a rivalry that—despite setbacks on both sides in 2026—is destined to shape the future of tennis.
During the interview, there was also a curious remark that directly involved Italy’s number one player. Speaking of self-control on the court and citing Rafa Nadal as a prime example in this regard, McEnroe noted that it’s nearly impossible to never lose one’s temper on the court, explaining that even a “man of ice” like Sinner will, sooner or later, lose his cool in this regard as well. “Federer or Alcaraz himself have each broken a racket at least once. Sinner? It’s never happened, but sooner or later he’ll break one.”
First, however, we’ll have to see Sinner back on the court, and, unfortunately for the many fans of the Italian star, that won’t happen before the start of the 2027 season. Jannik is working to resolve his knee tendinopathy, and in a message posted on his social media channels, he admitted that he had to take a break with the long term in mind. Sinner’s decision has also been applauded by a global tennis phenomenon like Novak Djokovic, who emphasized the importance of knowing when to stop—even if it means sacrificing short-term results and earnings.
