Antonio Conte is getting closer and closer to returning to the bench. The Lecce-born coach, who left Napoli last summer after two seasons, is currently without a team and had expressed in recent interviews his intention to take a year off. But a big opportunity is just around the corner.

According to rumors, Manchester United has identified the former Juventus, Inter, Tottenham, and Chelsea coach as the right choice should Michael Carrick be fired: the former Red Devils midfielder, who took over from Ruben Amorim last season, is on thin ice following this year’s dismal start. In their last four games, Manchester United has earned just two points, and the risk of another year in the lower half of the table is growing.

According to reports, initial talks are underway: even the bookmakers are seeing the odds on his arrival plummet. Manchester United hasn’t won the Premier League in 13 years, and in the last ten seasons has won only one FA Cup and one League Cup.

In a recent interview with The Athletic, Conte left the door open to a return to the bench even during the current season: “If it were worth it… There are many clubs that have somehow lost sight of their history. I’d love to go to one of those clubs to dust off that history and make it shine once again. Clubs where there’s pressure, where you know full well you’re not going just to participate.” Words that seem tailor-made for a club like Manchester United, historically accustomed to winning and now desperately searching for an identity.
