Italy’s defeat against the United States in the Davis Cup semifinals, which came in the doubles decider, left a lot of bitterness and frustration in the millions of Italian tenis fans. In particular, those who were quite disappointed by the match’s denouement is Fabio Fognini’s dad – Fulvio -, who vented on his Instagram account at the end of the match with the following post : “You hear them talking and they are all happy for making it to the semifinals. Instead, it was an absolutely must win Davis! And anyway Fabio and Simone can play until they are 40 in this competition.”

The mesage sparked discussion and so Fulvio intervened again on social media to clarify his words, silencing the controversy: “I write these few lines to dispel all suspicion and controversy: far be it from me to blame anyone for the defeat in Davis. Perhaps I was unladylike in expressing myself so directly. I repeat, I am just pissed off that I missed a chance to win the Cup. If someone then embroiders my words to his liking, those are facts that do not concern me. Unfortunately, that’s the way I am and I think I am unlikely to change or not say what I think.”
