Spain, Luis Enrique’s farewell official
Luis de la Fuente takes over for Luis Enrique
The elimination from the World Cup in Qatar at the hands of Morocco has cost Spain’s coach Luis Enrique dearly: the Spanish Football Federation has announced the end of the relationship with the former coach of Roma and Barcelona among others, in his place Luis de la Fuente, who has so far led the Iberian Under-21 national team.
“The RFEF sports directorate has transferred to the federal president a report explaining the need to start a new project for the Spanish national team, with the aim of continuing with the growth achieved in recent years thanks to the work done by Luis Enrique and his collaborators. Both the president, Luis Rubiales, and the sporting director, José Francisco Molina, conveyed the decision made to the coach. The Asturian coach has managed to give a new impetus to the national team since his arrival in 2018, through a deep renewal that has consolidated a generational change in the team and in Spanish soccer. Luis Enrique has qualified for two UEFA Nations League Final Fours and reached the semifinals of Euro 2020 with his own stamp and through a defined style. He has opted for young talent and sowed hope for the future of the Spanish national team. The RFEF sincerely wishes Luis Enrique and his team good luck in their future professional projects. The coach will always have the affection and admiration of the entire Federation, which will always be his home,” reads the note released by the Football Federation of Spain.
