Roberto Mancini does not despair: “In the recovery great Italy”
Despite the defeat, the ct does not despair.
Roberto Mancini is not bowing his head after his Italy team’s defeat, which was bent 2-1 by England in the first match of the qualification path to Euro 2024. In fact, the Azzurri coach, in the aftermatch in Naples, dwelt on the good second half of his team and the convincing performance of Mateo Retegui in his debut with the national team.
“We were aware that this was a difficult match, but in the end we conceded two goals on the development of two corners,” Mancini pointed out to the microphones of ‘Rai Sport’. “In the second half, on the other hand, we dominated, we should have at least tried to equalize. For this there is much regret, but there is still a long way to go.”
Mancini then dwelt on the secrets of Italy’s resurgence in the second half. “We started to press better,” the coach said, “In the first half we had not succeeded. In the second, however, I saw a great national team, and this gives us hope.”
A reflection, finally, on Mateo Retegui. “He needs to get to know his teammates better and Italian soccer in general. After all, he spent just three days with us. Against England’s defense he suffered a bit, but we have to give him time,” was Mancini’s warning.
