Giro d’Italia: McNulty mocks Marco Frigo in Bergamo, Armirail stays in pink
A surprise sprint victory, and no upheaval in the overall standings.
Brandon McNulty, an American from the UAE Emirates team, won the 15th stage of the Giro d’Italia 2023 starting in Seregno and finishing in Bergamo. At the finish line, the favorite Ben Healy and especially a splendid Marco Frigo are mocked. He himself launched the three-man sprint in the last 50 meters, but was then overtaken at the line. Instead, Bruno Armirail of Groupama-FDJ retains the pink jersey.
The three breakers of the Lombardy stage had already made their mark in the initial seventeen-man breakaway, managing to hold on even in the finale made up of the ups and downs on Orobic soil. On the Roncola Alta and then at the Boccola, at the entrance to the Bergamasque capital, they then found themselves in three for the heated finale. All were paired by the high ranking men, despite the breakaway attempts of Primoz Roglic and Joao Almeida, well controlled by Damiano Caruso and the others.
