Elisa Longo Borghini Italian time trial champion for seventh time
In Comano Terme, Elisa Longo Borghini won the women’s Elite time trial at the Italian championships, winning the tricolor in this specialty for the seventh time in her career after those of 2014, 2016, 2017, 2020, 2021 and 2022, to which are to be added the three inline titles of 2017, 2020 and 2021. The 31-year-old from Verbania (like Filippo Ganna), daughter of former cross-country racer Guidina Dal Sasso, was 47 seconds ahead of Marta Cavalli and 1’10” ahead of Alessia Vigilia. Below are Elisa’s post-race statements reported by the Bicisport website.
“I feel good, my legs are starting to turn and I came out of the Tour of Switzerland the way I wanted to. The road race will be different because the level rises even higher and the many climbs on the program will be difficult to digest. Who do I have to watch out for? Well, Marta Cavalli surprised me today, she did a crazy time trial. My name for Sunday though is Silvia Persico, who has been going really strong lately.”
“The Tour is the most important race in terms of media and sponsors. Already in its second edition it has become the number one event in the world, bypassing our poor Giro. I don’t want to be controversial, you know how I feel, but it’s bad to have no information a few days before the start. This is a very Italian thing to always be late. It bothers me, just as it bothers me that there was no live coverage for today’s time trial, while there was for the men. What can I say? The speeches are always the same. Fortunately, the movement continues to grow, but the attention given to it is still not enough.”
