Riccardo Piatti bluntly on Jannik Sinner after Wimbledon
Jannik Sinner’s former coach Riccardo Piatti in an interview with Il Tirreno commented on his former pupil’s performance at Wimbledon: “I saw little of Jannik’s semifinal because I was on the court. However, I checked the statistics and he came very close to Nole’s performance. That means he is very close to catching up with the monster Novak.”
According to Piatti, tennis is going through a special phase, between the youngsters on the launching pad and the old lion who still won’t give up: “Nole Djokovic continues to be the reference point and continues to play at his level, indeed perhaps with more precision and determination.”
“On the other side we have three guys who are growing like Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune and Sinner. Right now the focus is all on them but I would watch out for others as well.”
“Something has changed since that time from athletic training, to staffs, to what revolves around tennis,” Piatti continued. “From social media and the world that has become smaller and less distant. I want the kids to be autonomous on the court and know what to do in every situation. There is a path to follow and not everyone starts right away but some arrive later. You have to have a lot of determination and never give up. It’s not easy because you have to keep learning: just look at Nole.”
