Matteo Berrettini starts again

Matteo Berrettini is ready to restart by taking part in the Toronto Masters 1000 with an eye toward the US Open, a Slam in which the Roman tennis player was a semifinalist in 2019.

“After grass, we had the alternative of playing on clay in Europe, as we did in 2022, but the idea of focusing on training prevailed,” Vincenzo Santopadre clarified, as quoted on Ubitennis. “Right now it is a priority: Matteo needs as much to train as to play matches, since he has played few matches in the last year. Fortunately, he managed to play as many as four at Wimbledon, achieving a lot with little, since he was undertrained and not at the top, he was coming from a forfeit and had some discomfort from the physical point of view. So we focused on training.”

“Already last year, when he had won two tournaments in a row on his return after hand surgery, we realized that he can become competitive again in a sudden way, and now we have had the confirmation,” added the coach of the 2021 Wimbledon finalist. Every stop brings discomfort: a player loses the habit of tense moments, playing a break-ball, handling tension, and so on. Aspects that can only be regained by playing. Yet, even without all that and while not at his best, we understood that this is his level. A step that gives us confidence for the future.”
