Euro 2024, Emre Can can’t believe it: ‘I was at the beach, two days later I scored’
A goal that came without the protagonist himself being able to imagine it.
Emre Can wrote the first real fairy tale of Euro 2024. The Germany midfielder sealed the German victory over Scotland, signing the final 5-1 in the match that opened the European Championship program. The most curious aspect of the affair, however, lies in the fact that the former Juventus midfielder, now at Borussia Dortmund, è entered coach Julian Nagelsmann’s 26 only on June 12.
Initially, his place in Germany’s squad was in fact occupied by Aleksandar Pavlovic, who was forced to forfeit due to injury. The summons of Emre Can è therefore came in total emergency, so much so that the player had already gone on vacation in the belief that his season was now over. And to reveal it è was himself.
"This story è absolutely crazy, because just two days ago I was still at the sea,” Emre Can explained to the German press. The call from Germany è came as soon as last Wednesday, and so since then I have only been able to attend one training session. I joined the team a day before the game against Scotland, then I went in and scored".
"I am really grateful to Julian Nagelsmann and the staff of Germany. I feel a huge happiness", added Emre Can, who was called on by his coach at the 80'80' of the game against Scotland before scoring at 93'. He had never scored a goal né at the World Cup (which he never took part in), nor at the European Championships (he was there in both 2016 and Euro 2020).
