Lorenzo Sonego knocked out, tennis Italy loses another piece in Toronto

After the forfeit of Luciano Darderi, the withdrawal of Mattia Bellucci and the eliminations of Lorenzo Musetti, Matteo Arnaldi and Matteo Gigante, tennis Italy lost another piece at the Toronto Masters 1000: Lorenzo Sonego, in fact, failed to overcome the Andrey Rublev obstacle, able to win in a comeback, in the third round of the tournament, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
In the first hour of the match on the concrete of the Sobeys Stadium, a sports facility in the Canadian city, Sonego (number 38 in the world rankings) held his own brilliantly against the number 11 in the rankings, going on to win the first set with the decisive break placed in the twelfth game, thanks to which he managed to avoid the tie-break.
From there on, however, Rublev took the measures of the Turinese, earning the decisive break to win the second set as early as the third game and reacting to Sonego’s comeback at the beginning of the third set with two consecutive games at 4-3 that allowed him to bring home the fraction and the match. For Sonego, the bitter ending was accentuated by the double fault that gave Rublev the winning point.
For Sonego, therefore, the downturn continues: after reaching the round of 16 at Wimbledon, in which he surrendered to Ben Shelton, the Piedmontese tennis player was eliminated by Matteo Arnaldi in Washington in the second round (after missing the first thanks to a ‘bye’), before flying to Toronto and exiting in the third round at the hands of Rublev after defeating Bu in the previous round.
