Gianmarco Tamberi spies everyone: stern reflection a month before the World Championships
Gianmarco Tamberi may decide not to defend the high jump world title he won in Budapest in 2023: the athlete from the Marche region has in fact expressed strong doubts to the microphones of dell’Ansa about his participation in this year’s World Championships, scheduled in Tokyo from September 13, given the disappointing results so far this season.
The disappointing performance at the Caorle Absolute, where he did not go beyond fifth place, will be followed by the participation in the meeting in Heilbronn, Germany, on Sunday, Aug. 10, but questioned about his rainbow chances the Tokyo 2020 Olympian did not mince words: “I have to figure out whether it makes sense to speed up to make the Worlds or to take more time and finalize my recovery to the next three seasons leading up to Los Angeles“.
Tamberi was very disappointed with the 2.12 jumped in Caorle, far from the standards he had accustomed himself to first, as well as his fans. On the other hand, only a year ago the 33-year-old from Offagna jumped 2.36 to win the European gold medal in Rome, before starting a long negative period from the Paris Games onward.
In the Five Circles event, where Tamberi was one of the two Italian flag-bearers along with Arianna Errigo, ‘Gimbo’ had suffered physical problems that in fact did not allow him to be competitive in the finals, where he would not go beyond a measurement of 2.22. In Germany on Sunday, Tamberi looks for his answers: fans are waiting with bated breath.
