Lorenzo Sonego immediately had to say goodbye to the Us Open. Eliminating him in the first round was Tristan Schoolkate, who imposed himself 6-3 7.6(8) 1-6 1-6 7-6 even recovering a break in the fifth and decisive set.

The world number 46 didn&#8217t need just 20 aces nor 78 winners, a full 13 more than the Australian, who made it through the first round as he did last year.

“Today was not my day, unfortunately it did not go the way I wanted. I tried, I struggled…. but he was good in the important moments to pull out some incredible solutions”, Sonego’s analysis.

“He certainly played one of his best matches in his career. It went like this, this is what tennis is. There were a lot of situations and I had a lot of chances, especially in the second set, which was lost in a very tricky way. He played at a very high level and then in the fifth there was a bit of a repeat of what had happened in the second. Maybe the worst part was the start, I started badly and very slow, and so I gave him confidence. Physically I felt good, and also tennis-wise, but if we look at the numbers he was superior”.
