Gianluigi Donnarumma, regret grows in Paris: Lucas Chevalier error reignites discussion

The strange coincidences that the world of soccer offers on an almost daily basis have rekindled a topic of discussion that exploded in the summer in Paris with Gianluigi Donnarumma’s stormy farewell to PSG: on Monday evening, in fact, while the newly appointed Manchester City goalkeeper was receiving in the French capital itself the award for best goalkeeper of the year on the sidelines of the Golden Ball award ceremony (won by Ousmane Dembelé) while further south, in Marseille, his former team lost 1-0 to Olympique, as a result of Nayef Aguerd’s goal scored by taking advantage of a blunder by Luis Enrique’s new team’s new goalkeeper, Lucas Chevalier.
The French goalkeeper’s empty exit proved decisive for OM’s success in the ‘Classique’ and sparked the ire of numerous Parisian supporters, who on social media strongly criticized the management for its decision not to extend the ’agreement with Donnarumma, letting him leave after a triumphant season, which ended with the ‘Triplete’ Ligue 1-French Cup-Champions League and reaching the World Club Championship final.
Donnarumma received the best goalkeeper award named after a legend of the role, Lev Yashin. This is not the first time the Azzurri number 1 has received this award: back in 2021, the year he was instrumental in winning the European Championships with Italy’Donnarumma won it ahead of Edouard Mendy and Jan Oblak.
In 2025, on the podium, however, were Liverpool’s Alisson and Inter Milan’s Yann Sommer, while Chevalier, fresh off a brilliant season at Lille, finished ninth in the same ranking. However, this was not enough to convince all PSG fans: in fact, at the first defeat of the season, supporters were bitterly divided between those who preached patience and those who, on the other hand, expressed all their frustration with the new goalkeeper.
