Aaron March, historic giant slalom victory at age 39

Parallel Italy knows only how to win, and it is Aaron March’s turn to continue the blue team’s winning streak, which after the two Mylin pearls signed by Bormolini and Felicetti, finds its third first on the Tondi track in Cortina d’Ampezzo (Belluno). And the Italian triumph is completed by the third place of the same Bormolini who overtakes in the small final Edwin Coratti, who was fourth alongside his sister Jasmin in the women’s race. But ahead of everyone today is the 39-year-old March: the South Tyrolean from Fiè allo Scillar finds a way to celebrate for the first time in giant slalom on the highest circuit, after winning four times in slalom. That it could be the right day the Army bearer had realized it with the best time in qualifying: between eighths and quarters, Austrians Burgstaller and Obmann can do nothing, while in the semifinals it is Bormolini himself who gives way to the South Tyrolean. The decisive act is an experienced duel with the other Austrian Benjamin Karl, who starts better but is then beaten by six-tenths.
Here is March’s hot comment: “This is really special. I love Cortina d’Ampezzo and to win here is really the best. I like night races, I felt my best from the start. I am so happy and I can only dedicate this victory to all the guys who every year allow us to experience a crazy race. It’s a track where you have to push at certain points, to make speed: experience pays off a lot on the Tondi and it’s no coincidence that Karl and I, now in our 40s, made it to the final.” In the small final Bormolini wins over Edwin Coratti: the Livignasco man has no intention of getting off the podium: for the third race out of as many in the season he is in the top 3: first and third in Mylin, third in Cortina d’Ampezzo. The personal haul thus rises to 21 personally (11 in giant, 10 in slalom). To reach the finals, Bormolini was able to overcome Austria’s Payer in the batteries and the returning Roland Fischnaller in the quarters, with Daniele Bagozza out in the round of 16 at the hands of Japan’s Masaki Shiba. Korea’s Kim and Poland’s Kwiatowski, on the other hand, were Coratti’s opponents before his semifinal challenge with Karl.
After the first six races, there are already eight podiums won by the team coordinated by technical director Cesare Pisoni.
The next appointment with the parallel is set for Thursday, December 18, in Carezza, on the border between the provinces of Bolzano and Trento, with another giant slalom.
Pisoni himself cannot but emphasize the great moment of his boys.
“Three races and three different winners is a symptom of the team’s strength. They are fighting with the knife between their teeth to deserve the Olympic pass. Good job indeed. And bravo also to Jasmin Coratti who had managed to overcome Miki only to slip up in the final two rounds. Today it was March’s turn to dominate, with Bormolini always on the podium: really great stuff. They are all doing incredible things.”
