Carabao Cup 2025-2026: Manchester City-Newcastle United, the likely lineups

At Manchester’Etihad Stadium, the name of the team that will face Arsenal at Wembley in the 2025-2026 Carabao Cup final will be decided. Against Newcastle United, Manchester City will restart from the 2-0 first leg, a result that came thanks to goals from Semenyo and Cherki last Jan. 13. In front of their own fans, the Mancunians want to secure their access to the final act of the tournament, while the Magpies chase an almost impossible but necessary comeback in order to continue the defense of the trophy they won last year.

Pep Guardiola’s City is actually not having a bright moment: in the last five games they have picked up only two wins and the 2-2 draw with Tottenham highlighted a decline in the second half, with six goals conceded and none scored in the Premier League in the new calendar year. The Etihad Stadium remains a fortress, however: there have been 14 home wins in the 18 season games played so far. Absences weigh heavily, especially in defense, but Guardiola is counting on Cherki’s quality, Bernardo Silva’s leadership and Haaland’s presence to close the qualification talks.

As for Newcastle, the 0-2 loss in the 0’first leg interrupted a streak of ten consecutive Carabao Cup victories, but Eddie Howe believes in the comeback, calling the goal conceded in 98′ of the first leg “a tough, but not fatal blow”. History, however, does not smile on the Magpies: only one win in the last 18 away matches at City’s home ground and a disappointing away performance, with just three wins in 16 matches this season. Absences are heavy, especially in midfield, where Guimaraes and Miley will be missing, while Joelinton, Livramento, Schär and Krafth remain in the pits. Tonali will lead the midfield, with Willock and Ramsey on either side of him, while in attack Howe could return to a role center forward after the scoreless experiment seen at Anfield.
