King’s Cup, triumph for Galbiati’s Baskonia: Scariolo’s Real Madrid knocked out

Baskonia had outstanding accounts with the King’s Cup and settled them in Valencia. Arriving amid doubts and physical problems after a complicated season, it won its first title since 2009 by beating Sergio Scariolo’s Real Madrid 89-100 in a spectacular final destined to remain in Vitoria’s memory. It is the seventh trophy in its history.
Real Madrid tried several times to escape, but each attempt was rebuffed. When Baskonia took the lead, they never let go.
The keys to success? A magnificent Luwawu-Cabarrot (28 points), decisive in the most difficult moments; Trent Forrest, one rebound away from a triple-double (22 points, 11 assists, 9 rebounds) and MVP of the Cup; Omoruyi (23 points) dominant under the basket; Howard’s final flare-up; and, above all, Diakite’s two decisive stoppages on Tavares and Hezonja in the final minutes. Coach Galbiati’s guidance was also crucial.
After a lightning start by Madrid (13-2), Baskonia reacted immediately. The game remained balanced and intense until the last minutes, with continuous overtaking. In the final, the greater concentration and cold blood of the Basques made the difference. A perhaps unexpected, but fully deserved triumph.
