Farewell to Giancarlo Sarti

On the day the Juvecaserta name returns to the national scene, one of the greatest protagonists of the irresistible rise of the Juventus lineup passes away: Giancarlo Sarti passed away in the morning.
He was born in Pontremoli on April 22, 1936. He was one of the best basketball players with the jerseys of Pallacanestro Livorno, Fortitudo Bologna, Pallacanestro Cantù and APU Udine. In 1971, when his competitive career ended, he embarked on a working career first as an executive of the Udine club itself and then in the company of patron Snaidero before moving in 1980 to Juvecaserta, called by Cav. Lav. Giovanni Maggiò in the corporate reorganization plan of the Juventus club, then in the A2 series. His experience and the convinced support of the Juvecaserta ownership allowed Giancarlo to establish himself among the best general managers in Italy. It is to his work that we owe the creation of the prolific bianconero nursery with so many talents grown in the guesthouse he wanted in via Isonzo, but also the coming to Caserta of a coach like Bogdan Tanjevic and the discovery of athletes like Gentile, Esposito and Dell’Agnello who were then the protagonists of the historic bianconero scudetto. After the promotion to A1 in 1983. Coppa Italia final in 1984 and the Korac Cup final in 1986 with the Montenegrin coach on the bench, he switched in 1986 to Pallacanestro Trieste where he stayed only one season before moving to Fortitudo Bologna, where he stayed for three seasons. Recalled by Gianfranco Maggiò, he returned to Caserta in 1990 just in time to win the Scudetto with the team whose creation he had largely contributed to. He remained in Caserta until 1998. He then collaborated for years with DA Luciano Capicchioni. In the ranking of the most successful general managers in Italian basketball, he ranks fourth among Italian GMs after Maurizio Gherardini, Toni Cappellari and Cesare Rubini

Funeral on Saturday at the Church of San Francesco in Villafranca in Lunigiana at 5:30 p.m.
