It’s official, from next MotoGp season on all weekends a sprint race will be introduced on Saturday

MotoGp announces a sudden revolution from next season: from World Championship 2023 a Sprint Race will be introduced, to be held on the Saturday of every weekend in the MotoGp class. A sudden move to shake up a championship that has been orphaned by Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez is suffering a continuous hemorrhage of viewers, on TV and at circuits, at least in countries like Italy and England.

The paddock is already divided between those in favor and those against. Fabio Quartararo and Pecco Bagnaia appeared immediately skeptical, the Ducatista complaining that he was not consulted beforehand and that he only learned everything from the press. CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta responded thus, “The riders have to be informed, but the contractors are the teams, from the beginning in the safety commission our commitment was to talk to them, the important thing was to talk to the manufacturers.”

Thus Jorge Viegas: “From 2023 in every Saturday afternoon there will be a Sprint race, not only in some races like in F1. After two years of Covid it is time to give more show and spectacle on TV and on the track by increasing the attractiveness of Saturdays. There are still details to be worked out and discussed with the teams, but for sure the starting grid will always be defined by Qualifying on both Saturday and Sunday.”

“The show is already at a very good level,” said Poncharal, “but there is room for improvement. It would be stupid not to look at what is happening in other categories. The teams have unanimously agreed because the format will be more exciting for TV and sponsors.”
