Italvolley dream, is world champion
Poland-Italy 1-3
Ferdinando De Giorgi’s young national team writes a very important page in the already glorious history of Italian volleyball by beating Poland 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-20) at the Spodek Arena and thus becoming World Champions 24 years after the last gold medal won in Japan (Tokyo 1998).
For the Azzurri this is the fourth rainbow title after those obtained in ’90, ’94 and ’98 and thus becoming the only team after the USSR (with a quota of 6 between ’49 and ’82) to reach that goal. Coach De Giorgi is the first Italian coach on the tricolor bench to win the title after Velasco’s 2 and Bebeto’s one; again, this is the fourth title for him after the three won as a player.
For the final act of this rainbow review just Ferdinando De Giorgi has lined up Giannelli on the dribble, Romanò on his diagonal, Lavia and Michieletto the setters, Anzani and Galassi the middle hitters, Balaso free.
