Roger Federer retires, trainer: “A relief.”

Days pass and the details about Roger Federer’s retirement increase. This time it is the Swiss champion’s long-time trainer who speaks: “The announcement was made on Thursday, September 15, but we on the team have known about it for some time. It was not a decision made overnight. In July Federer started doing training blocks combining various elements and realized that he had to put in a lot of effort to reach a relatively low intensity, which is insufficient to compete at the highest level.”

“It’s not just about the knee. Roger is 41 years old and has played so many matches during his career, putting his body through so much strain. It is a miracle what he was able to do between 2017 and 2019. Competing on the tour takes extreme effort, and you have to know when it is too much. His decision was a relief to me, because I didn’t want him to get injured again and have problems in the future. Federer made everything look easy on the tennis court, but there is a lot of work behind it that people don’t even imagine,” he stressed to the Swiss newspaper Blick.

Novak Djokovic’s message for Roger Federer also arrived in recent days: “Roger, it is difficult to live this day and it is complicated to put into words all that we shared in tennis. Over a decade of incredible moments and battles to look back on. Your career has made it clear what it means to achieve excellence and to lead with integrity and poise. It has been an honor to know you, on and off the court. I look forward to celebrating your achievements and seeing you in London.”
