Alpine skiing, skips the first round of the World Cup
Official: no skiing in Soelden
Due to heavy rain in Soelden, the organization has decided to cancel the first event of the Alpine Ski World Cup, the women’s giant slalom. Initially, the race had been postponed by an hour, but as the weather conditions have not changed, the decision was made to cancel.
The FISI statement: “Rain mixed with snow that fell overnight on the race course forced the organizers of the women’s giant slalom opening the Women’s World Cup on the Rettenbach in Soelden to cancel the race. The track conditions did not ensure completely safe conditions for all athletes, which is why the decision was made not to hold the competition. Now track officials will work on the slope in preparation for the men’s giant on Sunday, October 23 (first run at 10 a.m., second run at 1 p.m.). It had been since 2006 that the women’s giant slalom in Solden had not been canceled due to weather conditions.”
Sunday should go better for the men’s giant (which skipped twice in a row, in 2017 and 2018), although there is a slight concern due to wind.
