F1, harsh penalty for Alonso who exits the points zone
Harsh FIA sanction against the Asturian.
Fernando Alonso finished seventh at the finish of the Grand Prix of the Americas but was relegated to 15th place five hours into the race. So he went from six world points to zero.
According to the FIA stewards (on an official appeal filed by Haas), the Asturian’s car was unsafe after the accident with Lance Stroll (the rearview mirror came off in the middle of the race) and, as a result, a penalty came. It should have been 10 seconds but, as the race was over, it was converted to 30 seconds. Alpine, via Twitter, let it be known that a formal protest has been filed with the FIA: the Haas appeal was allegedly made beyond the time limit allowed. The yellow thickens.
