Giro d’Italia, Domenico Pozzovivo’s challenge after tough time
Domenico Pozzovivo launches a new challenge at 40 years of age
There will also be Domenico Pozzovivo, wearing the Israel-Premier Tech jersey, at the Giro d’Italia 2023. A presence that just a few weeks ago was not so obvious: not only because of the “venerable age” of the Policoro native, who turned 40 last November 30, but also and especially because until the Israeli team’s call Pozzovivo was without a team.
At the press conference, the veteran of the group returned to those difficult months: “At the beginning of the season it was hard, on a morale level, to see those who were training with me in Lugano going to the races while I was forced to stay at home, not having a team. But I always believed in it, I trained on my own, with tests on the high ground and race simulations: the team welcomed me very well, there is already great mutual trust.”
Pozzovivo’s goal is to replicate, if not even improve on, his eighth-place finish in the 2022 Giro: “I know that for me the years go by and that the opponents are young and strong, but if the leg is what I hope it will be, I could finish in the Top 10 again. To succeed at 40 would be no small satisfaction.”
