Blue expedition leaving for the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow

The Azzurri expedition for the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow takes off tomorrow. The 21 athletes summoned by the technical director, Antonio La Torre, will reach Scotland, where Friday will open the indoor rainbow event that puts 26 titles up for grabs in three days of competition (March 1-3).

On Thursday morning, in official training on the eve of the event, the Azzurri will have a chance to familiarize themselves with the track and platforms of the Emirates Arena while in the afternoon, during the team meeting, the captains of the national team will be defined.

Among the Azzurri, two start with the best accreditation in the world 2024: Mattia Furlani 8.34 in the long jump, Catalin Tecuceanu 1:45.00 in the 800 meters. On the team are weightlifters Leonardo Fabbri (super 22.37 in Lievin) and Zane Weir, respectively world silver medalist in Budapest and European indoor gold medalist in Istanbul last season.

In Turkey, Larissa Iapichino in the long (silver) had also made the podium, again in the top group. From the winter of Italian athletics records land in Glasgow, among others, Zaynab Dosso record holder in the 60 with 7.02, hurdler Lorenzo Simonelli, middle distance runner Pietro Arese (3000), pentathlete Sveva Gerevini. First world championship for the European champion from Istanbul, Samuele Ceccarelli.

In Glasgow, as many as 20 reigning world champions and seven Olympic gold medalists from Tokyo and 18 champions from Belgrade 2022 will gather, but in all, 651 athletes (331 women and 320 men) representing 133 nations will compete. Italy in Belgrade had won a world title with Marcell Jacobs in the 60 meters and a bronze with Gianmarco Tamberi in the high jump, for a total of seven finalists and 14th place in the points standings.
