In fact, the women's Italvolley dominated the final against the United States and with a very clear 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-17) allowed the Azzurra expedition to end on a high note, with the same number of podiums as Tokyo but with more triumphs.
Julio Velasco’s girls, fresh from brilliant victories over Serbia and Turkey, did not tremble against Plummer and her teammates who immediately went into confusion in reception and attack. Coach Kiraly tried everything by drawing heavily from the bench but never found a way back into the game.

Velasco thus avenged the defeat he suffered as coach of men's Italvolley in Atlanta 1996 and gave the women's sector its first medal at the Games, of the most precious metal, 22 years after the world triumph in Berlin, when Piccinini and her teammates won at the tie-break against the United States.
