Beatrice Chebet first woman under 14 minutes in the 5,000

Double Kenyan Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet (5000 and 10000 m in Paris) has set a world record in the 5000 meters, running in 13’58″06 during the Prefontaine Classic meeting in Eugene (Oregon, U.S.).

Chebet, 25, who a year ago had already broken the 10000-meter world record in the same stadium at the’Hayward Field, is the first woman to break the 14-minute barrier in the 5000.

The previous record was held by Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay, who ran in 14’00″21 also in Eugene on Sept. 17, 2023. Chebet, 25, also holds, as mentioned, the 10000 record in 28’54″19.
