Lindsey Vonn never-ending: her downhill in St. Moritz, podium fades for Sofia Goggia

A sensational Lindsey Vonn won the downhill in St. Moritz, Switzerland, that opened the fast track season in the women’s World Cup. The 41-year-old American, who returned to competition last season after a five-year hiatus, dominated on the ‘Corviglia’, returning to triumph nearly eight years after the last time.

The American champion made the difference in the second half of the race, finishing in 1’29″63 ahead of Austria’s Magdalena Egger, who was 98 hundredths behind. Third was compatriot Miriam Puchner, more than a second behind Vonn.

At the foot of the podium was Sofia Goggia, who finished in fourth place with a 1.31 gap from the U.S. star. As for the other Azzurri, of note were Laura Pirovano’s eighth place and Nicol Delago’s 11th.

The eighth place was the best.

For Vonn this is the’83rd World Cup victory. The American also becomes the’oldest athlete to win a World Cup victory since Federica Brignone (34 years old).
