Excellent performance for Flavio Cobolli at the Madrid Masters 1000: the Tuscan tennis player got rid of Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in just over an hour of play in the third round of the tournament at the Caja Magica. The Azzurro prevailed with scores of 6-3, 6-2, leaving the crumbs to his opponent.

Cobolli played a very solid match, and went at a different pace than the young Paraguayan, who could not keep up with him. The Azure won 86% of the points played with the first and 50% with the second.

In the first set Cobolli only needed a break in the fourth game, in the second partial he immediately broke his opponent and then repeated himself in the fifth game. In the round of 16 he will face a bad customer: Russian Daniil Medvedev, who overcame Norway’s Budkov-Kjaer 6-3, 6-2. Flavio has never in the past managed to beat the Muscovite, who in the two previous matches has won without ever losing a set.

In contrast, the other Italian competing on Monday, Luciano Darderi, was eliminated on the day, overcome by Argentine Francisco Cerundolo in two sets 6-2, 6-3. In addition to Cobolli, still competing among the Azzurri is world number one Jannik Sinner, who will face veteran Cameron Norrie on Tuesday.

It will instead be a completely unprecedented encounter between Sinner and Norrie: the two have never faced each other on the major circuit, although they often cross paths in training sessions. The Briton made no secret of his excitement for the challenge: “I’ve never faced him in a match, which is surprising since we’ve been on the circuit for about five years. I’m happy to be able to challenge him, although every time we practice he always manages to put me in great difficulty. He has tremendous confidence, he is probably the most confident player on the circuit right now,” Norrie told Sky Sports microphones.
