Matteo Berrettini, specific choice to restart after great bitterness

Just a few days after the bitter disappointment at the Madrid Masters 1000, including an on-court outburst toward his coach Alessandro Bega, Matteo Berrettini has decided to put a stop to it and open a new chapter in his season. In fact, the Roman tennis player will start again this week from the Cagliari Challenger, a 175-point event that will see several notable tennis players at the start, in addition to Berrettini himself.

Matthew’s first opponent will be the American Patrick Kipson, who precedes him by two positions in the ATP rankings (he is 90th, while Berrettini is number 92) and is remembered by the general public for having defeated Alex de Minaur in Acapulco two months ago. Whoever wins will face the tournament’s number one seed, Argentine Mariano Navone, number 45 in the rankings.

The roster, then, features Adrian Mannarino, Nuno Borges, Lorenzo Sonego, Hubert Hurkacz and Marcos Giron (all directly in the second round), among others: an important test, in short, on the eve of a month of May in which the Internazionali d’Italia and Roland Garros will catalyze the attention of fans.

For Berrettini, the appointment is crucial to regain the confidence that seems to have been lost for some time: still echoing the words shouted on the sidelines during the match he lost in Madrid to Dino Prizmic (“What are you talking to me about tennis? It has nothing to do with raising the trajectory or not, I can’t compete here,” he had said to Bega), the former Top 10 player’s hope is that Cagliari can be a springboard to relaunch himself toward the late spring highlights.
