Zverev goes down hard on Jannik Sinner after victory in Paris

Fresh Roland Garros winner Alexander Zverev in an interview with the official ATP website returned to talk about his victory in Paris, speaking frankly about Jannik Sinner, the big favorite on the eve of the event who was prematurely exited in the second round after an illness suffered in his match with Cerundolo. “Fortunately, I didn’t play against him in Paris. It’s not that I don’t want to challenge him, in fact I hope to meet him soon in the future, maybe as early as Wimbledon. But during the whole year I had good feelings and played well against everyone except Jannik.”
Zverev explained why with the Blue he never manages to come out on top: “What does Jannik do differently? Simply, he is the best. He doesn’t let you breathe, he doesn’t let you get into the match, he attacks you fast.” The South Tyrolean has won his last nine matches against the German, and has become practically a nightmare for the world number three.
Thanks to the $3.2 million prize he collected in Paris, Zverev has brought his total career earnings to about $65.8 million, narrowly surpassing his own Sinner, who is stuck at about $64.8 million. A record that may be temporary, considering the pace at which the South Tyrolean has been racking up titles and prizes in the first half of 2026, with five consecutive Masters 1000s won between Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome.
Sinner over the past two days has undergone several examinations at Milan’s San Raffaele Hospital, a comprehensive package of cardiac and metabolic checks. The checks would not reveal any significant physical problems: what happened in Paris would be attributable to a general state of fatigue, accrued after more than two months of intense competitive activity with little opportunity for recovery, aggravated by the extreme weather conditions. The world number one has therefore returned to Monte Carlo, where he has resumed training at the Country Club with coach Simone Vagnozzi.
