Como Transfer Market: Farewell to One of the Champions League Heroes: “You’ll Always Be in My Heart”

Como Transfer News: One of the heroes of the team’s historic Champions League qualification is leaving Como for good. It’s Alberto Moreno, who contributed two goals and two assists during the season that saw Cesc Fabregas’s team reach Europe. With his contract expiring, he bids farewell to the club, which in turn has thanked him for his contributions over the past two seasons.
“After 48 appearances, two goals, and two assists, Alberto Moreno bids farewell to Como 1907. A highly experienced player and an important figure both on the field and in the locker room, Moreno contributed with quality, professionalism, and dedication to a historic chapter for the Lariani. Everyone at Como 1907 thanks @18albertomp for his commitment and wishes him the best for the future, both professionally and personally,” reads the club’s message.
“The time has come to say goodbye, but I leave with the peace of mind that I gave my all on the field and with the knowledge that, together, we made history. Starting today, I’ll be just another Como fan, and you’ll always have a special place in my heart,” reads the left-back’s farewell post on social media. The decision not to renew Alberto Moreno’s contract—a Spaniard born in 1992—also stems from Como’s need to increase the number of Italian players on the roster ahead of finalizing the squads for the upcoming Champions League.
Looking back at the most significant moments of his time with Como, Moreno also played a key role in several crucial matches this season. In January, against Udinese, it was a foul on him that led to the penalty converted by Da Cunha for the final 1-0 score, in a historic victory—the first time Como had won a Serie A match via a penalty kick in 23 years. In another memorable moment, against Pisa, the Spanish fullback provided the assist for Nico Paz’s goal in the 5-0 win that propelled Como toward the Champions League spots.
Qualification for Europe’s top competition came on the final matchday of the season, with Como crushing Cremonese 4-1 while also capitalizing on Milan’s shocking loss to Cagliari. The Rossoneri, defeated 2-1 at home, plummeted from third to sixth place, handing the remaining two Champions League spots to Como and Roma. It was an incredible conclusion that will go down in the history of the Como club.
The need to comply with UEFA’s regulatory requirements for Champions League rosters—which mandate the inclusion of at least four players developed in the Italian youth system—is therefore the reason behind Moreno’s departure. With this in mind, Como has already sounded out Juventus about Fabio Miretti, a midfielder born in 2003 valued at around 14 million euros by the Bianconeri, although Fiorentina currently holds the upper hand in the negotiations. The Como-based club remains active in the market for quality Italian players, however.
On the retention front, meanwhile, there’s news that warms the hearts of fans: Nico Paz will remain with Como for the upcoming season. After Real Madrid exercised its buyback option by paying the agreed-upon 9 million, the Como-based club decided to immediately reinvest 60 million euros to keep the Argentine for another year. This decision was strongly desired by the player himself, who believes in Fabregas’s project and wants to showcase his talents in the Champions League before a possible return to the Bernabéu, where the Blancos will be able to buy him back in a year for approximately 80 million euros.
