Novak Djokovic will face Jannik Sinner in Friday’s Wimbledon semifinal, following an epic battle lasting over five hours against Félix Auger-Aliassime. Djokovic advanced to the next round at the end of a record-breaking match, which he won 7-6 (10), 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), decided by a thrilling fifth-set tiebreak. At 39, Nole has once again demonstrated his class, his experience, and an extraordinary ability to withstand pressure in the most critical moments.

The match went down in Wimbledon history as the longest quarterfinal ever played on the London grass courts, surpassing the previous record of 5 hours and 12 minutes set by Rainer Schuettler and Arnaud Clement in 2008. For Djokovic, this marks his 15th Wimbledon semifinal—his eighth in a row—another milestone added to a career already rich in records, and one that pits him once again against Sinner.

The rivalry between the Serbian and the Italian has been a constant throughout the world No. 1’s rise. Djokovic has been present at many of the decisive moments in Sinner’s transformation from a young prospect to an established champion: from their first meeting in Monte Carlo, when Jannik was still a teenager, to the 2023 Davis Cup semifinal, the 2024 Australian Open match, and last year’s clashes at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Sinner leads their head-to-head record 6-5, but the Serb won their most recent match: the Australian Open semifinal, where Djokovic came back to win in five sets before losing the final to Carlos Alcaraz, who denied him his 25th Grand Slam title. Against Auger-Aliassime, Djokovic also had to overcome physical challenges. In the first set, he required medical attention for a problem with his left leg, while the early closing of the roof altered playing conditions after the Canadian won the second set.

In the fifth set, the champion’s qualities shone through once again: composure, endurance, and the ability to raise his game at decisive moments. These are the same strengths he’ll try to bring to the court on Friday against Sinner, in a semifinal that promises to be a thrilling match.
