Jannik Sinner and Roger Federer: What’s Going On? Rumors from Spain of a Strained Relationship

The Laver Cup is not among Jannik Sinner’s commitments for the end of the season. The Italian player will not be taking part in the event scheduled for September 25–27 in London and, once again, will sit out the competition pitting Team Europe against Team Rest of the World. This absence has become a constant: since the tournament was established in 2017 on the initiative of Roger Federer, Sinner has never participated.
This decision has become the focus of an in-depth article by the Spanish publication *Punto de Break*, which asks why the world No. 1 has never taken part in the competition. According to the Spanish website, the explanation may be linked primarily to the Italian’s extremely rigorous management of his schedule. The article notes that Sinner has often prioritized physical conditioning over other events, emphasizing that the Laver Cup falls during a particularly critical period of the season—just a few weeks after the US Open and immediately before the start of the Asian tour. These are, in fact, the last few weeks available to recharge before the long end-of-year stretch.
The publication also points out that nearly all the major stars of modern tennis have participated at least once in the competition organized by Federer. Among them are Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Nick Kyrgios, Taylor Fritz, and Ben Shelton, all of whom took the court at the Laver Cup even after competing in the U.S. Open. Another theory put forward concerns Sinner’s reluctance to participate in exhibition events. While noting that over the past year the Italian has competed in the lucrative Six Kings Slam in Saudi Arabia and an exhibition match against Carlos Alcaraz in South Korea, Punto de Break believes that the five-time Grand Slam champion is generally uninterested in this type of event.
However, the most debated theory comes toward the end of the analysis. According to the Spanish website, one possible explanation could be the alleged “cold and distant” relationship between Sinner and Roger Federer. Several factors are cited in support of this theory, such as the fact that the two have rarely been photographed together, that they do not follow each other on Instagram, and that Federer—who was present in the Royal Box throughout the final week of Wimbledon—was not seen watching the South Tyrolean’s matches.
