Mircea Lucescu in hospital, illness in training

Mircea Lucescu, Romania’s technical commissioner, fell ill during the technical meeting preceding the last training session before leaving for Slovakia. The immediate intervention of the national team’s medical staff provided him with first aid, while two teams from the SMURD (Emergency Medical Service) later arrived.
According to the Romanian Football Federation, the speed of the assistance allowed the technician’s condition to be stabilized in a short time. Lucescu was then transferred to the University Hospital in Bucharest, where he underwent thorough investigations and specialized monitoring.
The federation clarified in a note the dynamics of the incident, stressing that the illness occurred during the national team’s training camp and that the timely intervention of medical personnel prevented more serious consequences. At the moment, the coach’s condition is considered stable, although he remains under observation according to medical protocols.
Eighty years old and a historical figure in European soccer, Lucescu has been coping for months with an illness whose details he did not want to disclose. Nevertheless, he had decided to leave the hospital temporarily to lead Romania into the World Cup playoff against Turkey, chasing a qualification that has been missing for 28 years.
