After the tam tam of the last few days, the Lukaku case officially deflagrated on Tuesday: in fact, Napoli officially took a stance regarding the player and, more generally, the situation and, through a press release, announced that they reserved all rights to take disciplinary action against the Belgian, who has not yet returned to Castel Volturno despite the club’s indications being clear by now.

“SSC Napoli announces that the footballer Romelu Lukaku has not responded to today’s summons in view of the resumption of training,” reads the official channels of the Neapolitan club, which resumed training today despite being without the national team members engaged between friendlies and World Cup 2026 qualifying matches. The club reserves the right to consider the adoption of appropriate disciplinary measures, as well as the continuation of the player’s activity in the team group indefinitely.”

Lukaku, due to an injury suffered last summer in a friendly match, missed most of the season, making a return to the field only last January 25 (12 minutes on the pitch against Juventus) and collecting, in six appearances, just 69 minutes in total, although he scored a goal, among other decisive ones, in the away match at the Bentegodi against Hellas Verona last February 28. After remaining for the full 90 minutes on the bench against Lecce and Cagliari, Lukaku had returned to Belgium, officially to resume his rehabilitation.

Napoli, however, had called him back to Italy more than once, but without the 1993-class striker responding to various reminders from the club, the last of which expired on Tuesday, March 31. Compatriot Kevin De Bruyne, from the Red Devils’ training camp, also commented on the situation: “We followed different paths after injuries, I completed everything in Belgium, Romelu half in Antwerp and half in Naples. With two different visions, it is difficult to work together: there have been disagreements, and this is not ideal to get back to our best.”
