Carlos Alcaraz and clay: the real opponent is the risk of injury

Carlos Alcaraz enters the heart of the clay court season with an unknown that can no longer be ignored: injury risk. If talent and results place him firmly among the best performers on red, his recent history also tells another, less reassuring truth: every spring, punctually, the physical presents the bill. The main node concerns the possible consecutive participation in Monte Carlo and Barcelona. Two important tournaments, but also extremely time-consuming. Playing them both means facing up to ten matches in less than two weeks, a load that, in light of precedent, is a real risk.

And it is precisely by looking at the past that the most worrying signs emerge. From 2021 onward, the Spaniard’s clay court season has almost always been accompanied by physical problems. In 2022 he was forced to skip Rome because of a bum ankle. In 2023 he gave up Monte Carlo due to accumulated fatigue. In 2024, a forearm injury kept him out of both Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

In 2025, finally, he arrived exhausted at the Catalan final, where a muscle problem forced him to stop and made him skip Madrid. A sequence that cannot be considered random. Clay, as favorable as it is to his game, also seems to be the surface that most tests his physical fitness. The real danger, then, is not so much losing a tournament as compromising the entire season. An injury at the wrong time could directly affect preparation for Paris, which remains the main goal.

For this reason, calendar management becomes crucial. Playing both Monte Carlo and Barcelona can offer pace and confidence, but inevitably increases the risk of overload. Conversely, a more prudent schedule could ensure better condition in key tournaments, even at the cost of forgoing a few prestigious dates. A lot will also depend on how the first leg goes: a short run in Monte Carlo would make a presence in Barcelona more sustainable, while a long, busy week might push his team to revise plans.
