Not only the Russians, the French are also raging against Daniil Medvedev, who was bludgeoned in Monte Carlo by Matteo Berrettini and the author of a pathetic tirade, complete with a smashed racket in front of an astonished audience accustomed to quite different attitudes.

“He suffered the worst defeat of his professional career this Wednesday, in the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000. The Russian failed to win a single game against Matteo Berrettini: 6-0, 6-0. The so-called “double bagels” now seem to have become a tradition in the Principality, since last year Alex De Minaur inflicted the same score on Grigor Dimitrov in the quarterfinals,” writes l’Equipe.

“Author of 27 unforced errors against just three winning strokes, Medvedev practically handed the match to his opponent, who did not have to struggle much (eight winners). The Italian took advantage of the Russian’s disastrous day, including long errors from the beginning of the exchange, predictable bunts, inaccurate volleys and even a few broken racquets, winning game after game. The 2021 U.S. Open winner appeared completely out of the match, closing with just nine points won on serve and 17 total points,” adds the transalpine media outlet.

“To find a defeat with this score by a top 10 player, one has to go back to the 2016 Rome tournament, when Tomas Berdych, then world number 8, was beaten like this by David Goffin. Roger Federer also succeeded in a similar “exploit” in 2005, at the Finals, against Gaston Gaudio.”

“Yet Medvedev, last year in Monte Carlo, had struggled mightily, eliminating Karen Khachanov and Alexandre Müller before stopping in the round of 16. Matteo Berrettini, on the other hand, had already made his mark in the previous edition by beating Alexander Zverev. The Italian, now down to No. 90 in the world rankings, will now face the winner between Arthur Rinderknech and Joao Fonseca for a spot in the quarterfinals.”
