Schooling spoils Phelps’ party

Even Michael Phelps can lose.
The 100-meter butterfly final was staged in Rio de Janeiro on the night and, surprisingly, it was Singaporean swimmer Joseph Schooling who won the gold medal by overtaking the holy monster of U.S. swimming, already the winner of four golds in this Olympics.
Schooling, who trains in the U.S., was the only one to go under 51″ and achieved the perfect race in 50″39, an Olympic record. Behind the new gold medalist came three with the same time for a truly bizarre podium: Michael Phelps, Chad Le Clos and Laszlo Cseh. Below the podium is China’s Li Zhuhao, class of 1999, author of a 51″26 run.
For the ‘Baltimore Shark’ this is the 27th podium at the Games (22 golds). Joseph Schooling’s is the first Olympic gold for Singapore, which had previously won silver in Rome 1960 (weightlifting) and Beijing 2008 (table tennis).
