An update comes from Rome’s big absentee, Carlos Alcaraz, who was forced to sit out with a wrist problem. Jannik Sinner’s great rival has missed Madrid, Rome and will also forfeit Roland Garros.

The news is that no deadline has been set for his return to the court, which could even be after the grass season.

This was revealed by former Spanish tennis player Pablo Andujar, who in an interview with RNE Deportes disclosed that he had spoken with the Murcia champion: “Let me tell you that I had the good fortune to talk to him for five minutes the day before yesterday, and he told me that he only wants to come back when he is 100 percent.”

So there is no deadline for a return to Queen’s or Wimbledon, indeed: “He doesn’t set deadlines; he lives for the day. I myself had a tough experience, five elbow surgeries: when you set deadlines, if you don’t meet them, you risk creating even more anxiety, even some depression,” Andujar explained. “So I think the important thing is that he deals with the situation day by day, and I see him well aware that by the time he comes back, he will be 100 percent.”

Alcaraz’s prolonged absence also has heavy consequences on the ATP ranking front. Sinner currently leads the ranking with 14,350 points, with a margin of 1,390 lengths over the Spaniard (12,960): a gap that is bound to widen further in the coming weeks, considering that Alcaraz will lose the points linked to his titled defenses at both the Internazionali d’Italia and Roland Garros, for an overall loss that could reach up to 3,000 points. A situation that, paradoxically, is not experienced as a net advantage even by Sinner’s entourage: coach Simone Vagnozzi has openly admitted that “without the main rival it is not easier, on the contrary: there is a bit more pressure.”
