Venice regained success at Taliercio after four consecutive defeats in front of its own public: the last home victory was on March 29. The timing chosen couldn’t have been better because in game 1 of the playoff quarterfinals Reyer overcame Tortona, which had beaten it in the very last round of the regular season.
The Venetian team led the match for almost the entire game, getting as high as +16 in the final. Tortona, however, reacted and pulled back to -4 with just over a minute to go before the buzzer. Bowman’s stoppage on Vital’s attempt with 10 seconds left was decisive before Cole’s free throws closed the score.
The decisive stretch came in the second quarter, closed with a 29-16 partial. Venice dominated in rebounding (50-29) and produced much more near the basket than its opponents. Tessitori starred under the boards with 13 rebounds and 3 stoppages, while Horton provided defensive solidity against the long Piedmontese players. For Tortona, in the first half, the only one to find offensive continuity was Baldasso with 10 points off the bench.
In the third period Venice lost several balls but maintained a double-digit lead. Tortona attempted a comeback in the last minutes, coming back from -16 all the way to 84-80, but failed to materialize the last chances.
